Cellar Favorite: 2011 Fritz Haag Riesling Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr Auslese #10

BY NEAL MARTIN | JUNE 8, 2026

The only thing better than a bottle of great Riesling is a magnum of great Riesling. On a recent trip to Burgundy, a member of the Burgfest parish unleashed a magnificent magnum of 2011 Fritz Haag Riesling Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr Auslese #10. I used to drink Oliver Haag’s wines regularly, and I personally feel that they still are a little underestimated by the cognoscenti. This bottle was further proof, a brilliant translation of Riesling in all its unfettered glory.

The aromatics explode with entrancing scents of walnut oil, Japanese mirin and orange blossom. A very slight petrol note floats in the background. Everything is delivered with heavenly definition. The palate is just as good: perfectly balanced, with fabulous weight and a real sensation of umami. The acidity effortlessly slices through the residual sugar to leave this Auslese feeling more like a Spätlese. Based on this magnum, the 2011 will have a 40- to 50-year shelf life. Stunning. 96/Drink 2026-2060.
