The 2024 vintage tested the mettle of every winemaker in Burgundy. In some ways, there are two entirely different growing seasons in the most complex and fascinating vintage I have ever reported on. Quantities can be absurdly minuscule, quality wildly variable, yet for every calamity, there is a triumph against the odds. It's a vintage that raises more questions than answers.

Michel Reybier’s La Réserve is home to several restaurants. The three-Michelin-star Le Gabriel is the hotel’s signature destination restaurant, while La Pagode de Cos offers a more informal environment. I recently enjoyed exceptional meals at both.

2024 Valravn Pinot Noir (Sonoma County), 91 points
The 2024 Pinot Noir (Sonoma County) is another fabulous value in this range from Valravn. Crushed flowers, spice and juicy red berry fruit inform this mid-weight, juicy Pinot. All the elements are so well balanced. Hints of cedar and sweet pipe tobacco add layers of complexity and dimension. (AG)

When I visited Japanese-born, Gevrey-based winemaker Koji Nakada to taste his Burgundy portfolio, he mentioned that he also makes limited amounts of Champagne and presented me with his current releases. Clearly, Nakada’s talents extend beyond the Côte d’Or.
